Environmental, Social and Governance ("ESG") is undoubtedly one of the hottest topics of development initiatives for corporations. In Hong Kong, ESG reporting has become a "comply or explain" requirement for all listed companies since the financial year commencing on or after 1 January 2016.


To better understand the nature of ESG and the impact of sustainable finance on life sciences/biotech industry, HKLSS has invited Mr Alvin Cheung, Assistant Vice President, HKEX to share with us an introduction of ESG and the framework for ESG disclosure, application and implementation.

Mr Alvin Cheung, Assistant Vice President, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX)


Alvin joined Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) in 2019 as Assistant Vice President in the Policy and Secretariat Services Unit of the Listing Division. He has a core role in pushing forward HKEX's major initiatives in ESG and corporate governance (CG) including the revision of HKEX's ESG Guide and CG Code, and monitoring of listed companies' ESG and CG reporting.


Before joining HKEX, Alvin served in Our Hong Kong Foundation as the Head of Social Development, who was responsible for policy research on green finance, ESG reporting, social impact assessment, arts innovation, and healthcare. Most of his policy recommendations in his publications "Green Bond Landscape Report"(2017) and "Policy review on ESG reporting" (2019) were adopted by the HKSAR Government and local financial regulatory bodies.


Alvin received his BSc in Economics and Finance with First Class Honor from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and MPhil in Economics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
